A Daily Litany

JMJ

This Daily Litany is meant to be prayed to seek a conscious connection to God – meditating with love on all the truths evidenced in each line. This means going as slowly as necessary – even repeating lines to ensure understanding – seeking God’s wisdom and truth and how the meaning applies to your life.

Some examples:

  • hallowed by the name” in the Our Father – Do I honor and revere God throughout my life?
  • pray for us sinners” in the Hail Mary – Do I recognize that I nail this woman’s son to the cross with my sins, and now I am asking her to pray for me?
  • that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.” in the Salve Regina – Am I cooperating with God in my thoughts and actions to be perfected as God himself is perfect?
  • Angel of God, my guardian dear” in the Guardian Angel prayer – Do I recognize my guardian angel’s presence through every moment of my life and lean on my angel in times of desolation as well as consolation?

This may take only a few minutes but it can also take dozens of minutes if you truly absorb each line. Allow the fullness to seep into your bones and the depths of your mind.

You may also find the power of this litany magnified by contemplating Christ in the Crucifix and/or kneeling to align your mind and your body in full focus with your soul. (“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” – Jesus Christ in Mark 12:30)

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

The Our Father

Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day
our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

O My Jesus

O my Jesus,
forgive us our sins,
save us from the fires of Hell,
lead all souls to Heaven,
especially those in most need of thy mercy.
Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary,
full of grace,
the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Salve Regina

Hail, Holy Queen,
Mother of Mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee do we cry,
poor banished children of Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this, our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Amen.

Serenity

God,
grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.
Thy will, not mine, be done.
Amen.

Inner Serenity

God,
grant me the serenity
to accept the people I cannot change,
the courage to change the one I can,
and the wisdom to know that one is me.
Thy will, not mine, be done.
Amen.

Self-Offering

God,
I offer myself to thee –
to build with me and to do with me as thou wilt.
Relieve me of the bondage of self,
that I may better do thy will.
Take away my difficulties,
that victory over them may bear witness
to those I would help of
thy power, thy love, and thy way of life.
May I do thy will always.
Amen.

Guardian Angel

Angel of God,
my guardian dear,
to whom God’s love
commits me here,
ever this day,
be at my side,
to light and guard,
to rule and guide.
Amen.

St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him,
we humbly pray;
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God,
cast into hell Satan
and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
